Hurricane Melissa
Hurricane Melissa was a powerful Category 5 storm in October 2025 that caused significant devastation across the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica and Haiti.
The Hurricane and its Impact
- Formation and Strength: Melissa formed over unusually warm Caribbean waters and rapidly intensified into a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of approximately 185 mph (298 km/h), making it the strongest storm ever recorded to make landfall in Jamaica.
- Path and Landfall: The hurricane made landfall in southwestern Jamaica on October 28, 2025, before moving northeast toward eastern Cuba and the Bahamas.
- Devastation: The storm caused severe damage, including destroyed homes, hospitals, and infrastructure, widespread power outages, and extensive flooding and landslides. The combined death toll across the affected region (Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic) was at least 76 people.
- Response Challenges: Damaged roads and communication systems hampered aid delivery efforts by organizations like the UN World Food Programme and the Haitian Red Cross.
